Send message in Windows Vista by Daniel Petri
May 1, 2010 Tips and Tricks
When using Windows XP and previous operating systems one could easily send messages from one computer to another by using the “Net Send” command from the command prompt. Typing a command like this:
Net send Daniel "Please contact help desk immediately!"
Would result in the computer searching for the location where the user Daniel has last logged on, or in case of a computer, where the computer called Daniel is listed, and would send that message to that user or computer. You should note that this method of sending messages was made available by the Messenger service running on the target machine. Without it, there could be no messages transmitted to that computer. Find and Replace with a MySQL Query
Feb 17, 2010 Tips and Tricks
There are times when you have a lot of data in a database (let’s say wp_posts for a WordPress blog like Ariejan.net). When you need to find and replace certain strings, this can be a very tedious task. Find all posts containing the “needle” string and manually replace all these occurrences with “chocolate”. With about 200 posts, you can imagine how long this would take to do manually.
But, as I always say: “You’re a programmer! You should script the hell out of everything!”
So, I found this: MySQL has built-in support to find and replace! Just a simple query will do:

Top 10 Must-Have Firefox Extensions, 2009 Edition
May 5, 2009 Tips and Tricks
Last time we compiled our must-have Firefox extensions, it was two years (and one browser version) ago. Our new list keeps some, tosses others, and remains our go-to, Grandmaster list of the best Firefox add-ons.
All four of the editors you see posting here daily were asked to name the extensions they think have the most day-to-day value while also adding something new and unique to the open-source browser. It was reassuring to see that more than half of the extensions we featured last time ’round are still on the list, as they obviously kept their value. But four newcomers cropped up in the two years since then, and were innovative enough, or showed enough potential, to make it on our new compendium.
Each Top 10 entrant is linked to the page where Firefox users can install them from. See if you can’t find something new for your browsing routine below.
10. AutoCopy

We like it because we’re bloggers, having to quote and copy links and code every day, but anyone who does a fair amount of copying to and from the web will dig AutoCopy. The basic use: It copies anyt text you select on the web as soon as you select it—no Ctrl+C necessary. For pasting into text forms, you simply hit the middle mouse button rather than Control+V. If that’s all it did, hey, we’d recommend it to anyone who writes, copies, or pastes a lot, but we also have to point out that it fixes really long, wrap-broken URLs automatically. Three cheers for fewer pinky-finger stretches!

How to Download Mp3s from Imeem, Last FM, Myspace Music and Pandora for FREE?
Apr 16, 2009 Tips and Tricks
Imeem, Last FM, MySpace Music and Pandora are probably four of the most popular music streaming sites that enable their users to listen to their user-uploaded music for free. However, most of these sites does not allow you to download the tracks directly. This becomes a frustration to many.
Imagine this scenario: You have just listened to a good, but rare music from Imeem, which instantly become your favorite. You search all over it over Google, Yahoo, file-sharing sites like 4shared.com, Rapidshare, and P2P programs like Limewire. But all of the searches returned “No Results”. Imagine how frustrating it is. I personally experience the frustration especially when I am listening to a playlist in Imeem. The only possible way to get the track is to pay for it in iTunes or Amazon. But who does want to pay when he/she can acquire it for free?
So to end up my frustrations, I looked for ways to download the mp3s or tacks from Imeem, Last FM, MySpace, Pandora, and the like. Here are a step by step procedure to do this.

Create a Shortcut or Hotkey to Turn Off the Monitor
Apr 13, 2009 Tips and Tricks
Have you ever wanted to hit a shortcut key to turn off the monitor? Sure, you can use the Win+L combination to lock the screen, but that leaves your monitor on… and those of us with multiple monitors find it a pain to hunt down the power buttons all the time.

First we’ll show you how to simply power off the monitor, and then how to both lock and power it off.
Create a Shortcut to Turn Off the Monitor
To create this shortcut, we’ll first need to grab a tiny multi-purpose utility called NirCmd from the great folks over at NirSoft. This Swiss-army knife tool can do an amazing array of tasks, including powering off the monitor. All we really need to do is create a shortcut to it.
Right-click anywhere on the desktop and choose New \ Shortcut:

Then you’ll want to browse to the location where you saved the nircmd.exe file, and add the following arguments:
“C:\path\to\nircmd.exe” cmdwait 1000 monitor off
Make sure the path has quotes around it, and then you add the extra arguments, which will wait 1 second before powering off the monitor (otherwise Windows might misinterpret your last keystroke and wake back up).
